What is an IP Address?

An IP Address is a numerical label assigned to a computer connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. The primary purposes of an IP Address are location addressing and network interface identification. Let's take a look at some of these uses. And while we're talking about IP addresses, why are there so many? Listed below are some of the reasons. But before we move on, let's define what an IP Address is.

Unicast addressing

While broadcast and unicast address formats both work for sending information, unicast requires separate data packets to be sent to each device. The latter is used when a device only has a single IP address, and a broadcast packet will be sent to all devices on a network. The purpose of a broadcast is to discover the unicast address. The device will then process the packet sent to the broadcast address.

Global unicast addresses are routable across the entire Internet. They start with 001. On the other hand, site-local unicast addresses are routable only within a specific site or link within an organization. IPv6 does not use unique local unicast addresses.  

Dynamic IP addresses

Static IP addresses and dynamic IP addresses have their advantages and disadvantages. Static IP addresses have a fixed IP address, and dynamic IP addresses can change, even for months. Moreover, there is no extra charge involved when using dynamic IP addresses. Dynamic IP addresses are more reliable, carefree, and accurate, but geolocation is less accurate. Dynamic IP addresses are better than static ones, but it depends on your needs.

With dynamic IP addresses, the Internet service provider allocates an IP address to a particular computer. For a certain period, the IP address is leased to that computer. Once the period has expired, it is returned to the pool of IPs. This method helps ISPs to have more subscribers and makes IP maintenance easier. However, dynamic IP addresses have some disadvantages that make them unsuitable for some uses. If you are unsure whether dynamic IP addresses are the right choice for you, contact your ISP.

Globally unique IP addresses

IP addresses are globally unique IP addresses used by Internet protocol (IP) servers to identify devices and services on the Internet. Known as a GIA, these addresses are defined as non-private addresses. Originally, this standard was created by the Internet architecture board, Merit Network Inc., in May 1993. Since then, the Internet has evolved into a worldwide network. However, there are concerns about its security. This article will discuss the pros and cons of GIAs.

The concept of globally unique IP addresses was first introduced during the early stages of the Internet when every computer was expected to have one. The idea was to allow different devices to talk to one another, and IPv4 addresses are 32-bit numbers. There are approximately 4.2 billion globally unique IPv4 addresses available in this system. The availability of these addresses is limited, and their increasing value is creating a growing market around their resale.

Locally unique IP addresses

Generally, IPv4 networking uses a global DHCP server to assign IPv4 addresses to all hosts. Each node maps its locally unique IP to other nodes within the network. Thus, local hosts can seamlessly connect to the Internet and other devices within the network. However, if you're planning to use IPv6 for your networking needs, it's important to understand the differences between global and locally unique IP addresses.

Locally unique IP addresses are different from external ones in that they can only be assigned to devices within a network segment. That is a great advantage when you have many devices on the network, but it can also create problems if you can't assign a unique IP address. Local IP addresses also work well with DHCPv4 and DHCPv6 systems. You can also assign link-local IP addresses to devices manually.
